Muzha Iron Goddess Oolong

$32.00

The Journey

Hailing from Taiwan, 'Ruanzhi' is foundational high mountain oolong stock. Its bouquet is pronounced and elegant and its taste creamy and smooth. As a white tea process, you can appreciate the variety and its expression of terroir. This particular lot was born from Spirit Tea's Cross Strait Collaboration--a meeting of the Luos--it was grown on the Fengqing farms of preservation and ecologically minded Yunnan Mr. Luo (Sunstone) and processed there by decorated, fastidious Taiwanese master Mr. Luo (Exuding Jade). Realizing the mission similarities of the makers, we broached the idea with the two, sponsored the travel, and commissioned select, exclusive lots. This tea is the result of a unique cross-strait collaboration between two renowned producers--both named Mr. Luo--from Taiwan and China: a project that Spirit Tea had been hard at work organizing and funding out of curiosity and love of the craft. Our team brought Taiwan's award-winning craftsman to Yunnan, the birthplace of tea, to blend his refined processing techniques with Yunnan's rich terroir, high elevations, and biodiversity. The outcome is a series of seven exceptional teas, each offering a distinct character--Taiwan's influence brings out heightened aroma, while China's methods lend a silky mouthfeel.

Muzha Iron Goddess Oolong

PRODUCER: Mr. Liang

Cultivator: Muzha Ti Guan Yin

COUNTRY / REGION: Taiwan / Pinglin

ELEVATION: 200 MASL

The Journey

In April the team had the pleasure of studying with the former processing champion of Taiwan, Mr. Liang. Liang is a treasure and we were fortunate to be imparted an iota of his skill and knowledge. Though we were enjoying the fresh and aromatic yields of the spring season, we commissioned an autumn harvest of Muzha-style Iron Goddess. Though it’s a matter of preference, autumn harvests are known for their superior mouthfeel to early spring. Using precise convection roasting, Liang elicits the fondest and most desirable qualities of Muzha in his productions: melding sugarcane sweetness with full toastiness, textured mouthfeel and a long-lingering fruit palate.

The Experience

Sweet and full mouthfeel with notes of stone fruit and toasted grain.
